Honesty is the best policy...unless you are hiding Jews during the holocaust, negotiating, or comforting someone during times of great fear and stress. In those situations, honesty will get people killed, get you taken advantage of, or worry them more about things they cannot control. Like all ethics, openness and honesty are situational.

The problem with any behavior is whether someone unwillingly is harmed or pays the cost of another person’s behavior—not who benefits. Therefore, both selfishness and altruism can be bad if it someone else ends up being harmed or paying for it.
