Honesty is the best policy...unless you are hiding Jews during the holocaust, negotiating, or comforting someone during times of great fear and stress. In those situations, honesty will get people killed, get you taken advantage of, or worry them more about things they cannot control. Like all ethics, openness and honesty are situational.
